So why Bulgaria?

Why indeed in the late 1990's newly single I go on a skiing holiday to Bulgaria, hated skiing loved the countryside, the self reliant attitude of the people I met.

Besides the obvious which is that village houses with decent sized gardens are very affordable compared to the UK.
The climate is, how can I put this, the climate is seasonal i.e. you have winter, spring, summer and autumn so excluding this year when the winter was very mild until the arrival of the "beast from the east" which also affected the UK, I  am led to understand that the climate can be relied upon to be "what it says on the tin".  Cabin fever during January and February, when I'm informed some ex-pats head off for sunnier climes while others "hunker down" catch up on TV and books,  to the surprisingly (at least to me) early  planting season so that if the ground isn't frozen in late February then seedlings can be planted out in the garden.  Here in the UK we don't plant out on our allotment until May/June.
I've read somewhere that Bulgaria has at least 300 days of sunshine a year (as a learner, if you know better please let me know).

So if I was to aspire to the "little house with a garden near to the coast" on a state pension Bulgaria was a "no brainer".
